Fraction Activities for Children in K to 7th grades

Fractions refer to a part of a whole; otherwise said, a fraction denotes a part of an object that has been divided into a given number of equal parts. Fractions are expressed as a relation between two numbers e.g. 1/7 (one seventh) means one out of 7 parts, 2/3 (two thirds) means tow out of three equal parts etc.

Teaching fractions usually starts at 1^st grade, when kids are taught how to recognize fractions using parts of a pizza, orange or cake. Here kids are taught basic fraction values and concepts e.g. ½, 1/3, ¼, etc. Kids also learn fraction vocabulary like the numerator (which refers to the number above) and the denominator (which refers to the number below).

At a more advanced level (e.g. 2^nd, 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th and 6^th grades) children start adding, subtraction, simplifying, dividing and multiplying fractions. Other topics related to fractions include reducing fractions to the lowest terms, finding the lowest common multiple of two fractions, finding equivalent fractions and more. After mastering the basics of fractions, children start learning how to solve math logic problems, word problems and other daily life math problems involving fractions. Fractions are fun and kids would develop an interest in this area of if well taught.
