The Common Core State Standards of the USA in 2nd grade math focus on the extending of a base ten notation. This means students should be able to count by fives, tens, multiples of 100. This also means the students should know how these numbers relate to one another. Students should also be able to recognize numbers up to 1000 place as they are written in base ten notation. Example 459 is 4 hundreds + 5 tens + 9 ones. Students will be building their proficiency with addition and subtraction. They should be able to apply base ten notation to subtract numbers up to the 1000 place. They should be able to calculate addition and subtraction in their head for numbers only in the hundreds or tens.
The Common Core State Standards in the USA also dictate students should know the standard units of measure, centimeter and inch. When they use rulers and other measurement tools they can determine length. When there is a smaller unit of measure they know that more units are needed to measure it. Students also begin describing and analyzing shapes in two and three dimensions. Students learn the foundation of area, volume, congruence, similarity and symmetry.
